San Diego Union Tribune Article: Warship named for valiant Marine ready for Navy

On Friday, February 3rd, the future USS RAFAEL PERALTA will deliver to the US Navy.  In a brief ceremony, the ship CO will accept custody of the ship on behalf of the US Navy.  An important day in the life of the ship, the delivery marks the moment when the ship no longer belongs to the shipbuilder (Bath Iron Works).  The crew will now live aboard the ship, be responsible for the operation of the ship, and most importantly, the safety of the ship.  The delivery only marks the acceptance of the ship into the US Navy — it does not mean that the ship is yet a part of the Active Fleet — a significant distinction.  The ship will officially become a member of the Active Fleet and be available for meeting the needs of the Nation when it is placed in commission in Summer 2017.  Come join us in San Diego to celebrate that moment at the Commissioning Ceremony.  Click here to find out more on how you can be a part of this historic occasion.
