We had a great second commissioning committee meeting yesterday. Lots of stuff going on to get the process started for the Commissioning Ceremony. As is typical with getting started we are laying the groundwork so that when a date is scheduled for the ceremony (we anticipate in Jan/Feb 2017), we’ll be off and running to have a ceremony that San Diego County will find memorable.
Update from the ship – they still anticipate being in San Diego in the June/July timeframe in 2017. An exact date is yet to be determined, since testing and trials are still ongoing. Alpha Trials were completed successfully on the 18th of October. Alpha Trials are the first of three underway events that pave the way for the ship to depart Bath, Maine and head back to San Diego. Various systems were tested. For more information on Alpha Trials, here’s a link: http://navaltoday.com/2016/10/20/future-us-navy-destroyer-rafael-peralta-completes-alpha-trials/
The committee also reviewed and approved some of the Administrative groundwork we needed to get done to include a budget for the commissioning efforts, a Public Affairs plan, fundraising plan and received an update from our Chairman, Paul Denyer, on his meeting with Morse High School (where Rafael Peralta went to High School).
The Committee plans to meet again in December. In between now and then, the Gifts committee will begin working with the ship on the Plankowner Plaque design, Commissioning Coin design and ideas for other gifts. The Events Committee is starting to evaluate potential sites and menus for the various Commissioning week events including the premier Friday Evening reception, Saturday VIP Breakfast and of course the Post-Commissioning reception.
Within the next few weeks, we hope to update everyone on our fundraising plans and provide you more information on how you can help with and participate in the Commissioning!
